چکیده

This chapter presents a practical framework that adapts the conventional home electric appliances with the infrared remote controls (legacy appliances) to the emerging home network system (HNS). The proposed method extensively uses the concept of service-oriented architecture to improve programmatic interoperability among multi-vendor appliances. The authors first prepare APIs that assist a PC to send infrared signals to the appliances. Then the APIs are aggregated within self-contained service components, so that each of the components achieves a logical feature independent of device/vendorspecific operations. The service components are finally exhibited to the HNS as Web services. As a result, the legacy appliances can be used as distributed components with open interfaces. To demonstrate the effectiveness, the authors implement an actual HNS and integrated services with multi-vendor legacy appliances. The authors also show practical applications implemented on the developed HNS. DOI: 10.4018/978-1-61520-684-1.ch018

Service-oriented Architecture for Household Energy Management

Recent advances in pervasive computing foster automated systems to support household energy management. Smart devices can be used to monitor both the consumption of household appliances and the presence and activity of people in the household. Based on monitoring results, intelligent feedback to residents and intelligent control of appliances is possible. In this paper we present a service-orie...

Design and Evaluation of the Home Network Systems Using the Service Oriented Architecture

In the conventional home network systems (HNS), a powerful centralized server controls all electric home appliances connected to provide value-added integrated services. However, when the number of the appliances increases and the appliances become more sophisticated, the conventional architecture would suffer from problems in superfluous resources, flexibility, scalability and reliability. Thi...
